Your rights under New Zealand law
Book Trade Ltd sells in trade, so every book you buy from us comes with the guarantees in the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. Those guarantees include that the book is of acceptable quality and that it matches the description, condition grade and photographs we published for it.
Nothing on this page or in our Terms and Conditions limits or excludes your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986. Where those Acts give you a right or a remedy, it applies in addition to anything we say here, and our goodwill policies below are extra to it rather than a replacement for it.
If a book fails one of those guarantees, you are entitled to a remedy. For a problem that can be put right, we will repair or replace the book, or refund you. For a problem that is serious, you may reject the book and choose a full refund or a replacement. There is no 14-day limit on this: the law allows a reasonable period, and what is reasonable depends on the book and on when the problem became apparent.
When you have a valid claim under the Consumer Guarantees Act, we pay the cost of returning the book to us and we refund the delivery charge you originally paid, as well as the price of the book.
Shipping
Delivery for a single book is normally $6.00 urban or $12.00 rural. Some books are listed with free delivery. Each listing shows the delivery options available for that book, and you choose one before you pay.
When you order two or more books together, we combine them into one parcel and charge a flat $8.00, urban or rural — or nothing at all, if every book in the order is listed with free delivery.
Whatever the rate, your cart shows the delivery charge and the full total before you pay, and we do not add any service or booking fee on top. We deliver within New Zealand only.
We are responsible for your book until it reaches you. If your purchase is lost, damaged or unreasonably delayed in transit, that is our problem to fix, not yours to take up with the courier. Contact us and we will replace the book or refund you in full, including the delivery charge.
Faulty, damaged or misdescribed books
We package our books with care and we grade their condition honestly, but we are dealing in second-hand books and we will sometimes get it wrong.
If your book arrives damaged, or in a worse state than the condition grade and description we published, email us at support@booktrade.co.nz and tell us what is wrong. A photograph helps but is not required. You do not need a receipt: we hold the record of your order and can find it from your email address or order number.
We aim to respond within two working days. Once we have agreed a remedy, we will give you a prepaid way to return the book where a return is needed, and we will confirm the outcome by email.
Change-of-mind returns
Separately from your legal rights above, we offer a goodwill return window of 14 days from delivery for books you simply decided you did not want. This is something we choose to offer; New Zealand law does not require it for online purchases.
For a change-of-mind return, the book must come back in the same condition you received it, you pay the return postage, and the original delivery charge is not refunded. We recommend using a tracked service, because we can only refund a book that reaches us.
Once we receive and inspect the book we will email you to confirm the outcome. Approved refunds go back to your original payment method. Bank processing times vary, so it may take a few days to appear on your statement.
If we cannot agree
If you are not happy with how we have handled a problem, you can take the matter to the Disputes Tribunal, or contact Consumer Protection at consumerprotection.govt.nz for free advice about your rights.
